Relaxing on the asteroid

When you land in the Delta Project your in the middle of a massive structure floating 2500 meters above the ground.  It’s an RP combat sim with a very interesting (under construction but fun to look at) dance club, plus the usual retail spaces hawking uniforms and weaponry. But if you wait a bit for things to rez you’ll see a sign for the Space Park. The Delta Project structure surrounds a “space anomaly” where you can relax.

It’s a creative little gem. You’re on a green little asteroid, covered with what appear to be space trees. Nothing on Earth has leaf clusters in the shape of soft cubes, anyway. Relax on a topiary couch (or did it grow that way?) and watch the planets spin by.

Pushovers

July 30, 2008

I promised myself I would spread the bot hunting posts around, but a) this one is too good to hold back and b) that darned real life work thing cut into my exploring time tonight, so better to have a bot hunting post than no post at all. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to become the bot hunting blog.

So yesterday I found this platform in the sky full of bots. What made it different was that these bots weren’t stuck behind walls, nor were they sitting on poseballs. That, shall we say, was their downfall.

Hey, what happened to everyone? It’s almost as if someone gave them a one way ticket to Groundsville…

Ah, there they are, milling around in the open. Now they can shop to their hearts content. Goodness knows they could use some better clothes… and skins… and hair…

The next morning the bots were back up on their platform, so I had to help them get down to earth again. While I was on the ground making sure they hadn’t hurt themselves, I noticed this sign, which is almost worh a post all its own. It reads (NSFW):

At least now I know where 2 go if I needs sumthing 4 having an ordinary sexlife in SL. Becuz a interesting one would b 2 stressful.

Later that day, someone took the bots back to their home in the sky and built walls around their platform. Sometimes they learn so fast…

Love boat for two

May 18, 2008

My wife, Jessa, IM’ed me from the Venice Passion shopping area because there was something fun she thought I might like to see. As you might expect in a place named Venice, there was a gondola. But not just any gondola… it was a gondola ride! We hopped on board, cuddled up, and set our boat on it’s automatic journey.

The ride is actually quite long and takes you through a lot of twists and turns through waterways wide and narrow, past what I can only guess are photosourced facades of Venice buildings. Here and there you can see romantic spots with poseballs that you’ll want to visit in order to extend your stay. If you get off the boat, though, it will dissapear and you’ll have to start from the beginning again. And when the boat makes tuns, those turns are sharp. Go on, you’ll find out what I mean.

The building textures get blurry on close examination and the build quality looks like Second Life circa two years ago, but really, guys, this isn’t about looking at the buildings. Once you’re snuggled up in the boat with the one you love the scenery doesn’t matter. Hey, honey, we’re in Venice, but all I can see is your eyes.

Whirlwind tour

May 15, 2008

Sometimes I wander around through the Japanese regions and I find a few interesting places, but nothing that would justify a blog post. But if I put them all together in one post…. ah, ha! I’ve created a whirlwind tour for you. Get on the bus, y’all and hold on tight, there’s some sharp turns ahead.

First up, Tokutoku Pocket, from NEC. I thought this region might justify a posting of it’s own, but the game here is so inscrutable… argh! The region is a lot of fun to look at, but I don’t have a clue what they’re selling. There’s flying saucer floating above the central building. It has a fifteen minute timer counting down. When it gets to zero a pod shoots out in a random direction. Find the pod (good luck), touch it, wear what you receive (it’s a HUD) and touch kiosk. You get L$2.

I want to those fifteen minutes of my life back.

Meanwhile, in Higashi, I found what might be the ultimate bus for a Neko Road Trip. If Neko’s have road trips. You know, you buy kitty litter and yarn and.. stuff.

Floating above Toyosu is a GundamMuseum. There’s precious little information here, but the models are nice and several of them are available as free avatars.

Richman Movies appear to be semi-professional (and I do mean semi) camp movies from the 80′s and on. I say they’re camp because I don’t think anyone would seriously make anything this bad except on purpose. The fights are ridiculous and the costumes are awful. And, even though I don’t speak Japanese, it’s asy to see that the acting is really, really bad. That said, the films are fun in that they almost revel in their badness. There’s a short film running now (be patient, it takes a while to load) and it is worth a watch, if only for the surprise ending.

On the egdge of Higashi there’s a unique tightrope camping setup. If you are patient enough to make it to the end (it takes a few minutes of watching yourself balance on the wire) you’ll receive L$1, L$5, ot L$50, depending on what the randomizer decides. Take a guess what it usually pays out. But maybe you’ll be luckier than me.

Channeling Jacques Cousteau

April 23, 2008

Zee wreckage of zee Santa Rosa lies deep in dangerous waters. Naturally, I sent my son Philippe down to explore. I always send Philippe. Zee wreckage was surrounded by a school of poisonous deep sea scrod, and the curious fish moved to examine zis intruder into their realm. Unfortunately, Philippe is a very slow swimmer. Fortunately, I have more sons.

For all the water in Second Life, we don’t spend a lot of time under the surface, probably because there’s nothing much there. Most SL water is for swimming on or sailing on (or, frankly, making for beautiful sunset pictures).

PADI Group is a real-life diving company that would like to whet your appetite for the real thing by giving you that experiance in Seond Life. While a good portion of their Dive World region is taken up by land, there is still plenty of space for some interesting sights under the sea.

Strangely enough, PADI doesn’t offer any freebie diving gear. There is, however, an atoll attached to their island where a variety of vendors can get you suited up. I bought a package from Heps Virtual Divesystems and jumped into the water.

A word to the wise: Read the instructions before you go diving wth equipment like this. Under the water you get nice swimming animation and bubbles, but I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t just move up and down the normal way. After a lot of frustration I finally gave in, checked my male genes at the door, and read  the manual.

Under water, there is plenty to see. Manta rays, squid, whales, shipwrecks, and strange smoking… somethings. Maybe a information would be helpful here. PADI is very good at placing underwater signs here and there that suggesting that you might want to try diving for real. Whatever.

Back on land, if you join the PADI group you can rent a DPV, a little motorized device that will move you faster under the waves. In theory you can also use a personal submarine just offshore, but that doesn’t work. The same goes for a gear demonstrator in the main building. The buttons you click for information don’t give you information. There’s a very sparse club on one corner of the island. So while the undersea experience is lovingly executed, the stuff on shore is a work in progress.

No matter. In Dive World, what’s under the water is all that matters.
